Grilled Asparagus

Elemental Custard

There is something to be said for simplicity... and vegetables.

Grilled asparagus is like the perfect relationship. It's good for you, requires a bit of seasoning, but the road is smooth and rock free with no tears or arguments. Perfectly low maintenance.

Sometimes the most simple preparation can be the most delicious. In the case of asparagus, nothing beats tossing it with a little bit of oil and some salt and pepper (or some chicken/steak spice- my personal favourite) and throwing it onto the grill. You hardly need a recipe for this - but I thought I would share the idea because this is probably my favourite vegetable preparation. I could eat these babies like candy.

I find it best when done on the barbecue but fear not, you can also get a similar effect from roasting the asparagus in the oven - although it won't have that grilled vegetable taste- it's still good though!

It's spring! Roast some asparagus up. You won't regret it. Your body will thank you.

Perfect. Simple. Delicious.

Recipe: Grilled Asparagus

Serves ~4

Ingredients:

1 lb asparagus (medium thickness)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp steak spice (or 1 tsp salt + 1 tsp ground pepper)

NOTE: These ingredients are approximations, you can free-style this one people. It's easy! Just add enough oil to lightly coat the asparagus and season (Don't try and drown it. Think of the asparagus as your friend. You don't try and drown your friends do you?)

Variations: (sub the steak spice)
drizzle of lemon, dried thyme and a touch of salt
1 tbsp mustard + 1-2 tsp fresh or dried rosemary

Method:

Snap the ends off of the asparagus spears or cut off the bottom 2 inches to remove the tough part of the stalk.

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and toss to combine.

Barbecue: Heat barbecue to a med-high heat. Lay the asparagus on the barbecue and grill for ~3 minutes per side.

Oven: Alternatively, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lay the asparagus in a glass pyrex or on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for ~20 mintues or until the asparagus are tender.
